Types of Freezer Issues
Here at Top Shelf, we’ve seen it all, from freezers that don’t run to freezers that are running but simply aren’t getting cold. Here are some common freezer issues and their causes:
The Freezer Isn’t Running
The first thing to check if it seems your freezer isn’t running is that it is actually plugged into a power source. Sure, it’s simple, but it could certainly be the cause. If, however, you’ve checked, and the freezer is definitely plugged in, then the issue could be with the wiring. You’ll know this is the issue because you won’t hear the “hum” of the freezer, and it won’t feel cool whatsoever.
In this case, we would carefully check the entirety of the freezer’s wiring, looking for a break. Then, once we find that break, we can repair it.
The Freezer Is Running but Isn’t Staying Cold or Getting Cold Enough
Of all the freezer issues we receive calls for to repair, this is by far the most common. There are several reasons why a freezer can’t get to or keep its temperature. Typically, the issue lies with either the compressor or the evaporator coils.
If it is the compressor that doesn’t work, then the freezer will not “hum” as it should. It either won’t hum at all, or the hum won’t be steady. If it is humming, then the issue may be with the condenser or evaporator coils. The good news here is that we can repair this issue relatively inexpensively.
If the issue is the freezer’s evaporator coils, then they may simply be frozen. You can run a defrost cycle to thaw them out so that we get there, we can more easily figure out what’s wrong and prevent it from happening again.
The Freezer Has Excess Frost Build-Up
There are two main reasons that explain why a freezer builds up excess frost. The more common of these reasons is that the freezer is not defrosting itself as it should. In other words, it is supposed to temporarily stop working every once in a while, specifically to prevent frost build-up. When it’s working overtime, that’s when frost forms. In this case, all we need to do is replace or repair the defrost heater or thermometer.
The second scenario is that the gaskets located along the freezer door are allowing outside air to leak into the freezer. This happens when the gaskets are old or worn out. While this happens less often, you’ll be pleased to know that this too is a relatively simple repair for our Top Shelf team – which results in less out-of-pocket costs for you.
